Time line for a typical Portfolio Application
| Stage | Typical duration |
|---|---|
| Evidence-gathering (before you even open the application) | 12–36 months |
| Application window (open → submit) | Up to 24 months (fixed limit) |
| GMC processing after submission | 6–12 months |
| Royal College / Faculty assessment | 3–6 months |
| Submission → Specialist Register entry | ~12–18 months |
| Total (start of evidence-gathering → registration) | ~2–4 years |
The honest bottleneck isn’t the GMC — it’s evidence collection, which most people underestimate by about a year. Once you actually submit, the GMC’s own processing (6–12 months) and the College’s assessment (3–6 months) run roughly back to back, so submission-to-decision typically lands around 12–18 months. Strong overseas logbooks, structured reports, and recent appraisals shorten the front end considerably; building everything from scratch stretches it toward the 3–4 year mark.
